I had a pleasure of getting to talk to Melanie Fiona, an incredible R&B, singer and writer. We’ve both been doing music for about the same time and she skyrocketed in the early 2000s. I never got to tell her this, but watching her do her thing was so validating not just for me, but for a Canadian artist , to see someone coming from where we come from to reach those type of heights is so motivating . We talked about her journey and how she’s releasing new music again. My only advice to her was not to chase perfection because we come from an era that felt like you had a small window of opportunity and after that they would drag you out to pasture and do you like Nino did Pookie. I told her that we all want to see her win and this new body of work is going to be perfect no matter where it ends up because that’s what was meant to be.. She smiled and told me we were on the same frequency. She fully understood that and we are both excited to hear new music. 5 minutes after that DJ Mel Boogie played “I choose you” and she gave everyone an impromptu live performance dancing included.😆
I’d love to work with her one day I think she’s incredible but even more so I’d love to see her win.
